Out and about in Bangkok 1

It's been a busy few days that have revealed some interesting Bangkok experiences.

On Sun I went to the National Museum. Relatively interesting but would have been more so with a guide to explain finer details. I can tell a Lanna style buddha from an Ayuthaya style Buddha but really have no sense at all of what this actually means aside from the actual poses the Buddha is in...

Mon was an unproductive packing day. For the first time since having to change rooms in high schoool, I am packing a place to the point of empty by myself. sigh.... it is such a drag...

Tues I got up bright and early to go to Pantip - an electronics centre and thriving hot bed of pirated DVDs and software. I was wandering around and all around the place shutters started slamming down and getting locked.....The police were coming..... It's been explained to me that the pirated goods sellers pay the police a set percentage and in return the police ring ahead to say they are going to bust..... Consequently the thriving hub of illegal activity no doubt resumed normal operations within 30 mins or so I expect....

Tues pm was the wedding of a colleague held in the school auditorium. In true Thai style it was 45 mins late. In what is probably exceptional, even for Thailand, one of the 4 bridesmaids came in half way through the ceremony as she was busy having her hair done.... hmmm.... I think that is enough comment on a semi-public forum, though the bottle of wine Vickie, one of my Russian colleagues, and I drank afterwards was well deserved...

Wednesday I tied up a few loose ends at school, went into town to see if I could get something for Rory and Xavier - boys are so much harder to buy for in Thailand.... T-shirts that are somewhat Thai themed are surprisingly hard to find in children's sizes. I also needed to change baht to AUD which took an hour or two of wandering around comparing rates - there can be quite a difference - and I was changing enough for it to make it worthwhile to look. Wed night I had a flash of I am not quite sure what .. but fortunately I had the flash.. which made me think to go and get a police clearance certificate for Thailand - necessary if I want to teach in Aus, or UK or possibly even some Japanese schools require it.
