What goes around...

I had a very heartwarming email from one of my former students in China today. I met up with him and his family while I was in China and actually stayed at his parents in law's place. As a student he was remarkable for his sharp mind, his sense of duty to his mother and grandfather (his father died before he was born) and for his headstrong determination - he was at uni financing the entire cost himself.

I helped him out a bit when I was teaching there, which caused him some consternation at the time because he didn't see a way to repay me. When I framed it that he would be teaching one day and would no doubt have students that needed some kind of extra help, he could repay it back then...it became OK.

Today he emailed to let me know that he had organised a collectione at his school for the mother of one of his students who was terminally ill and had undertaken to keep helping the girl as he can. He was a little troubled that he may have hurt her pride... but appreciated the irony. It was very heartwarming.
The photo is of him, his wife and daughter. They have a son who was just a couple of months old but he was asleep at the grandparents place.

What a great story. The world needs more people like you spreading consideration and generosity. Your ex-student has such a kind face. Imagine how this will influence his little girls life too- seeing her father organize support and care for his student.

Doing good to others is a wonderful practice. I will endeavour to try to teach Oli this too, by asking him every day, "Tell me one good thing you did today?". This evening he said he played computer. Well, it was the first time I asked him and he is only 3...
