Dinner
The place where I live is quite nicely set up for me.
A laundromat and 7-11 on the ground floor. 7-11 is especially useful for changing 500 or 1000 Baht notes or getting 10 baht coins for the laundromat (or one baht coins which will be a story for another day). In addition to 7-11 and the washing machines, by evening there is a row ofoutdoor eating places - basically glorified food stalls where you can sit down - and half a dozen or so takeaway food carts. I often get papaya salad made fresh on the spot for my dinner.
Branching much beyond papaya salad, pad thai or pork / chicken on a stick is delving into the world of the unknown where caveat emptor reigns. Tonight I lost in the dinner time lucky dip. I had ordered my papaya salad when a red chicken curry caught my eye. No problem, papaya salad for breakfast, and ordered both.
Red curry chicken it was not.
Mussel and bamboo shoots a la street stall it was....
Shell fish is one of my street food taboos.
Pork, chicken, beef, raw vegetables no problem....
Eating mussels is akin to sending a request to be food poisoned....
And so to eat.. or not to eat....
For the affirmative I hear Hiro remarking that I have a 'tetsu bara' - stomach of iron - and it's disrespectful to the life of the food stuffs to waste them. And I nod in agreement.
on the negative I can hear Dad saying 'if in doubt throw out'....
Hmmm a quandary...
I decided that as today is Sat. food poisoning will not be the worst thing in the world. And who knows, if I do have a tetsu bara after all I might have found something else that I like and can order easily....
The result...
I doubt I will get food poisoning, the chili content will see to that... it's also not going to be necessary to order it again. Luckily I had the disclipine to leave the watermelon till last - good for getting rid of the after taste!
:)
